There are a couple of stories floating around about how the pigs got on the island of Big Major Cay in the Exumas.
One is that sailors dropped them off and were coming back to cook them, but never returned. Another is that they survived a shipwreck and swam to shore.
My personal thoughts are this:
Two Bahamian guys were passing a bong back and forth and one said, "Hey Mahn, I know how we can make some money. We will take some pigs to an island and charge tourists for a boat ride to go swim with them."
However they got there, it is a great way to make you smile!
We paid for our excursion and they told us to wait at a picnic table. Over the hill comes a tall guy with dreadlocks, a ball cap, and a blue shirt that said, "Swim with the Pigs"
I looked at my husband and said, "Here comes our pig wrangler!"
They took us on a boat ride out to the island. They gave us sliced apples and the pigs came running. I have been wanting to do this for many years. Bucketlist item! My husband thought I was crazy! (It's not the first time he has had that thought in 32 years.) All of the people on the tour, except my husband, got in the water and had a blast with the pigs. People from all walks of life having a great time swimming with pigs in the ocean.
We stayed for about an hour and they told us it was time to go back. We took the boat ride back and as we walked away from the dock, my husband looks at me and says, "I'm ready for a Bloody Mary and a BLT!"
